The CEO of Amazon hates the term "work life balance". What do you think?
Jeff Bezos, CEO of one of the fastest-working companies in the world, has little time for “work life balance”. The phrase, he argues, implies a strict trade-off between work and the rest; but he claims we should be aiming at a more holistic relationship between home life and work life.
At a recent event hosted by Springer, Bezos claimed he recommends to his employees to strive for a better deal than a tight balancing. “I try to teach young employees and actually senior executives at Amazon too. But especially the people coming in. I get asked about work-life balance all the time. And my view is, that’s a debilitating phrase because it implies there’s a strict trade-off.”
This work life is, according to Bezos, key to maintain the energy necessary to accomplish great things. But work life balance implies something static, a sum zero game: you take more from life and less from work, and vice versa.
It is, in fact, the opposite of that: “The reality is, if I am happy at home, I come into the office with tremendous energy. And if I am happy at work, I come home with tremendous energy. It actually is a circle; it’s not a balance”.
